Background

In 1978 the Norwegian authorities instructed the diving contractors and operation companies to have procedures and equipment for evacuating divers under pressure. In the following years it was an unsolved problem where to transport these pressurised rescue vehicles.

Safety Notice 6/85, which was issued by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate in 1985, outlined the requirements for emergency plans for evacuation under pressure. This notice stated that rescue plans were to contain information on how divers under pressure in a hyperbaric rescue unit would be transferred to a decompression chamber.

As a consequence of this, Nutec's management in January 1987 agreed to invest in a decompression chamber with suitable equipment to make it possible for the diving industry to meet these requirements.
